Eczema & Psoriasis

Information

Eczema and psoriasis are common inflammatory skin conditions that can affect patients
of all ages. Both may be chronic, disruptive, and sometimes hereditary, but effective
treatments are available.

Eczema

Chronic inflammatory skin condition related to a weakened skin barrier and
overactive immune response

  • Can begin in infancy, childhood, or adulthood

  • More common in individuals with a personal or family history of asthma or allergies

  • Bacteria on the skin may worsen inflammation


Common triggers include:

  • Prolonged water exposure without moisturizing

  • Dry or hot climate

  • Emotional stress

  • Harsh soaps and fragrances (including detergents)

  • Bubble baths

Psoriasis

Autoimmune skin disease that can start at any age

  • May be hereditary

  • Causes chronic inflammation and scaling

  • Up to 30% of patients may develop psoriatic arthritis, leading to joint pain and stiffness
