Hyperpigmentation

Information

Hyperpigmentation is a consequence of long-term sun exposure or can be related to certain medications or hormonal influences.

Treatment

Treatment will be directed by determining the underlying cause and a customized plan formulated during consultation.

Melasma

Information

Melasma is a chronic and challenging type of hyperpigmentation that results from hormonal changes and sun exposure. Pregnancy, for example, can trigger overproduction of melanin that causes the mask of pregnancy on the face and darkened skin on the abdomen. Taking oral contraceptive pills may also aggravate melasma due to estrogen stimulation of melanin-producing cells.

Treatment

Daily scrupulous use of sunscreen and sun avoidance are crucial. Iron oxide is a key sunscreen ingredient, as it protects against visible light. Some examples of brand names are MD Solar Sciences, BB Mineral Crème, Elta MD Elements, Color Science, or Avene High Protection Tinted Compact.

At MDMG we prescribe safe skin lightening products, both as orals and topicals, to fade darkened skin patches. These agents slow the production and or distribution of melanin. Prescription bleaches contain at minimum twice the amount of hydroquinone as over-the-counter skin bleaches. Additional ingredients such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, and tranexamic acid can be helpful. MDMG partners with top specialty pharmacies to prescribe effective, highly customized yet affordable solutions.

Combining microneedling with PRP has been beneficial to many patients. Often, we recommend a series of several sessions 1-2 months apart.

Lasers: Intense pulsed light can sometimes be helpful, as is the fractional ablative UltraPulse CO2 laser used skillfully with precise energy settings, but melasma remains a chronic condition, which can be very challenging to treat, and we will advise on the best plan for you after thorough evaluation.
