Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with more than 2 million cases diagnosed each year. Melanoma is the most serious form and remains a leading cause of cancer-related death in young women.

Common Types

• Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) - the most common and typically slow-growing​

• Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) - may spread if not treated early​

• Melanoma - the most aggressive form of skin cancer

Risk Factors

• Fair skin

• Family history of skin cancer

• History of frequent or severe sunburns

• Cumulative lifetime sun exposure

ABCDE's of Melanoma

Early recognition of melanoma is critical. Use the ABCDE rule to evaluate moles or pigmented lesions:

• A – Asymmetry: One half does not match the other

• B – Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges

• C – Color: Varied colors including shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue

• D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller

• E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or symptoms such as itching or bleeding

Any lesion showing these features should be evaluated promptly by a dermatologist.
