Moles & Pigmented Lesions

Information

Moles are harmless skin growths that may be flat or protruding. They vary in color from pink flesh tones to dark brown or black. Everyone has moles; some of us have a lot, others have only a few. Intense sun exposure in childhood translates to a larger number of moles, and hereditary factors are important. Rarely, a mole can become cancerous. If you have a mole that is showing unusual growth or expansion compared to your other moles, please schedule an appointment for evaluation.

Treatment

Most moles are harmless and safe to ignore. Treating a mole for cosmetic reasons is a simple procedure called a shave biopsy. If the mole is much darker than the surrounding skin and has a deeper component, a better aesthetic outcome may be achieved with a punch biopsy or complete excision. Although some ablative lasers can be used for removal, often no tissue can preserved during the removal process for analysis in a pathology laboratory to confirm the potential benign or malignant nature of the lesion.

Moles sometimes grow annoying coarse hair, and hair may be safely removed by shaving or plucking. Permanent removal of the hair, which has roots deep within the skin, requires electrolysis, laser removal, or complete surgical excision of the mole.
