Acne
Information
Acne is a common, genetically influenced skin condition that affects teenagers and adults. It occurs when hormonal changes stimulate excess sebum (oil) production, leading to clogged pores on the face, chest, and back. Acne often begins at puberty but may persist into adulthood if left untreated.
How Acne Develops
Acne starts when oil, dead skin cells, and debris clog the opening of an oil gland, forming a comedone.
-
Blackheads (open comedones) form when the pore opening is dilated.
-
Whiteheads (closed comedones) form beneath the skin surface.
Bacteria trapped within pores can cause inflammation, resulting in red bumps (papules),
pustules, nodules, or cysts. Deeper inflammation increases the risk of permanent acne
scarring.
Our Treatment Approach
At MDMG, our dermatologists create personalized acne treatment plans based on skin type, severity, and lifestyle. Treatment options may include:
-
Topical therapies: Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and prescription retinoids to unclog pores and reduce inflammation
-
Diet and lifestyle guidance: Emphasis on low-glycemic foods and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables
-
Hormonal evaluation: Certain birth control pills, IUDs, or hormonal imbalances may worsen or improve acne
-
Oral medications: Antibiotics or spironolactone for persistent or hormonal acne
-
Isotretinoin (Accutane): For severe or scarring acne, with close medical monitoring
-
AviClear® laser: FDA-cleared laser treatment that reduces oil gland activity; performed in a series of three sessions (not insurance-covered)
Acne often fluctuates with stress, hormones, and physical activity, but early and consistent treatment can prevent scarring and improve long-term outcomes. Schedule a consultation with our dermatology team to discuss the most effective acne treatment options for you.
