Rosacea

Information

Rosacea is a common skin condition often called adult acne, but it is different from hormonally-based acne. It affects women and men equally, across various skin tones. Rosacea causes facial redness, flushing, and blushing, most often affecting the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Small bumps and visible blood vessels may also develop, but unlike acne, rosacea does not cause blackheads or whiteheads.

Common triggers include heat, alcohol, spicy foods, and exercise. Symptoms may come and go at first, but without treatment, rosacea can worsen over time. Genetic susceptibility is a factor.

Treatment

If you think you may have rosacea, there are many excellent, effective options. Treatment is personalized and may include lifestyle modifications, diligent sun protection, prescription medications, and light or laser therapy. Our practice offers V-Beam laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy, both are FDA-approved to treat redness and breakouts associated with rosacea. In the year 2000, we were one of the very first dermatology practices in Northern California to offer the highly effective V-beam laser, and we have enormous experience. With proper care, rosacea can be well controlled, and symptoms often improve significantly.
