Warts

Information

Warts are common, non-cancerous skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They often feel rough and are skin-colored, but can also be flat, smooth, or darker in color. Their appearance depends on the type of wart and where it develops on the body.

Common types of warts include:

  • Common warts

  • Plantar (foot) warts

  • Flat warts

  • Genital warts

Warts are contagious and can spread through direct or indirect contact. They may take months to appear after exposure. The virus is more likely to enter through broken or irritated skin, and some people are more resistant to warts, while others are more vulnerable due to their innate immune system.

Treatment

Dermatologists offer several effective treatments depending on the wart’s type and location. Options may include freezing with liquid nitrogen, V-beam laser therapy, topical medications applied in the office or prescribed for home use, or immunotherapy. Multiple visits may be necessary depending on individual response, and the number and size of warts.
